Glaucoma In Ayurveda

Glaucoma is a multi faceted disease. Person if not diagnosed timely may lose vision, parmenetly.

As we continue checking patients, its being concluded, these cases has to treated on systemic and shiro gata doshas first. simultaneously for eyes, we have to check avastha. If patient has angle closeure, we have to do sang nirharan. For which Yag PI (laser), is one technique. Along with it we have to added advantage of ayurveda modes of treatments like kriyakalpa for eyes to relax and rejuvenate the eyes. This concept of relaxation and rejuvenation is not available in allopathy.

In cases of Open angle glaucoma, we have to take care of IOP, to look for blocked channels in head area, or lack of nutrition to body channels, which are the major factor for increasing IOP. So according to Ayurveda we focus to open the channels and provide nutrition to body, which in turn regularises flow of the fluids in body channels, especially with referance to eyes.

In OPD, when patients approach with already having 2 or 3 or 4 anti glaucoma drug therapies. They complain of even after following allopathy treatment their IOP and substantial eye related problems are recurring or not getting cured. With Ayurveda treatment, these patients get symptomatic relief on initial therapy, and later they improve their vision due to relived stress on the eyes, opened body channels, nutrition reaches to end organ. Even many cases show improvement to such extent that their allopathic Anti glaucoma drops reduce, due to sustained and controlled IOP through out. So its a blend of treatment which is being addressed.

We have to monitor these patients for
  1. According to ayurveda - we have to analyse Nadi, Prakruti, Facial symmetry, Nasal and ear related changes, Marma points, affected doshas in head and body, drushti, avastha,
  2. Vision and other baseline parameters
  3. IOP - Intra ocular pressure
